Thousands of young girls in the West African country of Mauritania continue to be subjected to the cruel practice of ‘gavage’ or force-feeding to make them more desirable for marriage. Girls as young as five are still being subjected to the tradition of Leblouh every year. This inhuman practice is often inflicted upon the girls with overt support and participation of the parents. Similar to the cruel practice of genital mutilation which is often carried out by the mother while other female members of the family hold the victim down.
